Innovation in the Basque economy: situation, scope and perspectives to be analysed in Eustat’s summer course
The course will take place on 8 and 9 July, both online and in person, as part of the UIK [University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) Summer Courses Foundation] summer courses programme
“La innovación en la economía vasca. Situación alcance y perspectivas” is the course organised by Eustat in this year's UIK summer courses programme, which will take place on 8 and 9 July 2024, both online and in person at the Miramar Palace in Donostia.
The aim of the course is to show the extent of innovation in the Basque economy, analyse the mechanisms driving innovation to improve competitiveness, and understand the factors facilitating the innovative ecosystem of the economy.
Over the two days, experts and actors involved in the field of economy and innovation will discuss the current status of the Basque economy in terms of innovation, which is key to understanding its competitive potential. They will take an in-depth look at its impact in order to be able to quickly and easily adapt to changes that occur and improve competitiveness, in a context where public and private strategies become elements of analysis together with the information available through official statistics.
Programme and lecturers
The first day of the course (8 July) is divided into three classes. The first class, taught by Eustat’s Deputy Director of Production and Statistical Analysis, Mariví García Olea, and Head of Business Statistics, Javier San Vicente, will look at measuring innovation, sources, resources and results. The Director-General of Research and Innovation at the European Commission, Cecilia Cabello, will then discuss the importance of R&D&I for provincial cohesion and, finally, the first day of the course will be concluded by the Director-General of Orkestra [Basque Institute of Competitiveness], Maria José Aranguren, whose presentation will focus on innovation for the improvement of competitiveness.
On 9 July, there will be 3 sessions held by the Head of the Science, Technology and Innovation Policies Unit at Innobasque [Basque Innovation Agency], Alaitz Landaluce, where we will learn about the status of innovation in the Basque Country, the international context, European comparisons and provincial analysis. The Director-General of Tecnalia, Jesus Valero, will then show us the results of applied research in the Basque Country, and the series of classes will be brought to a close by the Director of the Biophysics Institute, Iván Ubarrechena, who will analyse 3 areas: science, talent and innovation.
The course will end with a panel discussion of conclusions and proposals for improving innovation in the Basque economy. Members of the panel will include the Director of Technology, Innovation and Sustainability, Cristina Oyon, the Director of Innovation and Technology at the Mondragon Corporation, Eduardo Beltrán de Nanclares, and the Director of Ikerbasque [Basque Foundation for Science], Fernando Cossio.
